The other day, the MTA was testing a new "real-time" train arrival system on the L train. This is great news - anyone who rides that train knows that if you miss a train you could be waiting either 2 minutes or 10 on any given morning for another one. According to a Daily News article I read, this should be launching in a few weeks. Don't know when it'll be tested and launched on other lines though...

Re: real time train arrivals
Mon, January 15, 2007 - 4:44 AMalright...y'know those LED displays on the platform that give you the time and date along with other lovely messages - (ie: "if you see something, say something," "ride safe...")? The intention is that those are going to have a more useful function telling you how many minutes until the next train - which takes the guesswork out. The reason it's being launched on the L first is really because that line is supposed to go automatic eventually. Hope that answers any questions you have! -

Re: real time train arrivals
Mon, January 15, 2007 - 2:21 PMI guarantee there will be new ways to commit crimes using this. I'm not exactly sure how, yet. But I just know that realtime information on NYC subway schedules displayed in huge LED signage can be exploited somehow. Just wait. :-D -

Re: real time train arrivals
Mon, June 11, 2007 - 11:25 PMFrankfurt has had it for a while too. GPS tracked trams and trains that tell you at each stop how long until the next one arrives, whether its stuck in traffic, etc...
Its wonderful. After my visit there I realized how far behind NYC is in terms of public technology. Kinda sad actually.
