real time train arrivals

The other day, the MTA was testing a new "real-time" train arrival system on the L train. This is great news - anyone who rides that train knows that if you miss a train you could be waiting either 2 minutes or 10 on any given morning for another one. According to a Daily News article I read, this should be launching in a few weeks. Don't know when it'll be tested and launched on other lines though...

Has anyone read the supposedly authentic book called Mole People about an extensive homeless community living deep underground, including some urban wildnerness types who hunt rats for food? I've glanced at the book in the past and always wondered if there was some truth to it.

I had cause to exit the Times Square Shuttle via the north track/platform at Times Square recently
Unless I was too focused on other stuff and missed it...it would appear the entrance depicted in my photos in the album (opening day vintage as far as I know) has been closed and walled over. It also appears some of the remaining vestiges of the opening day tilework on the south platform have been covered over too.

Damn.

... the next time I walk into a subway station, and the kids have jammed up the Metrocard CC and bill slots with empty cards they've found on the ground, to sell swipes, and I'm late as it is... I make no promises on their chances of survival.

Alright. Fine. I won't kill them. Maybe I'll just stuff them in the one of the "iron madien" turnstiles and put the night padlock on it. You'd figure at least an hour before someone stops laughing and calls the fire department or MTA to unlock or cut the padlock off... Hmm. Nah, they'd jump me later. With big brothers and friends. Besides I'd hate to be responsible for sending FDNY crews out on a stupid call like this, someone's house could burn down.

I guess I'm back to just killing them...

fashion and comparative self-worth in the subway

This is a broadside I've been distributing in the subway as of today. These words were handwritten and illustrated with a fountain pen, then photocopied onto yellow double-sided A4 paper, folded into enveloppes, and handed to persons who seemed aware/receptive/intelligent/down-to-earth. Let me know what you think!
-Geneviève

May 2006
Manhattan

Dear Sir or Madam:
Hi there!

You don't look like you've put much effort into your appearance.

It's funny, in American society today, this kind of comment tends to be taken as an insult (think makeover shows on TV, glossy magazines, red-carpet-obsessed tabloids, etc.) but I mean it as a compliment!
Yey you!!! (Really.)

As a female who grew up in Paris, France, I know what it's like to be swept up in fashion culture—as a teenager, every outfit I wore was planned head to toe, I was afraid to go out without makeup…sad, isn't it? Though clothing can be used as an artistic means of self-expression, Fashion Culture, more often than not, is as unhealthy as air pollution.

Fashion Culture is what tells teenagers that they have to have a "look" and identify themselves by that look (I'm a skater; I'm preppy; I'm a hippie; I'm a jock, etc). It's what persuades even the most intelligent individuals that they have to look like a sex toy in order to find a life-partner/soul-mate. It's what tells women in work environments that they don't look professional if they're not dressed/made-up like Catherine Zeta-Jones in Intolerable Cruelty. It's what drains our bank accounts and takes little jabs at our self-esteem on a daily basis, especially in New York, where there is always someone more attractive/better dressed than you nearby.

I lived in New York a full three months before I realized how silly it was that I, someone who values intellect and creativity and authenticity, was spending half an hour or more in front of the mirror every day and feeling intimidated in the streets by those better dressed/better groomed than I.

"ENOUGH!!!!!" I said to myself. I packed away my "nice" clothes and makeup and went on my last shopping spree: I bought some men's grey Champion shorts and some simple boy's black/white/grey Hanes undershirts, and a generic grey sweatshirt, and decided to wear only these with few exceptions (weddings, etc—I don't want to alienate my family!).

IMMEDIATELY I noticed several changes for the better:

1.) I didn’t have to wonder "How do I look?" or "What should I wear?" or "Does this go with this?" any more. Only "Is it raining?" and "Is it cold?" So I found myself with lots of EXTRA TIME to think about the things I actually wanted to think about!

2.) I felt physically comfortable all the time. This made me HAPPIER, FRIENDLIER, and MORE PRODUCTIVE!

3.) Laundry became much EASIER and cheaper! (No brights, fancy delicate fabrics to worry about, and no dry cleaning bills!)

4.) I broke my cycle of peer-pressure induced compulsive buying ("I need new makeup, clothes, shoes…" –No, I really don't. (!!!)) This SAVED me MONEY and time.

5.) Most importantly: the people I began attracting (in cafés, in parks, at parties) were always the most intelligent, genuine, no B.S., free-thinking people around—the people I wanted to meet anyway! My outfit was so neutral that no one could form socio-economic/cultural prejudices against me, and the asexuality of my grey garb caused people to treat me first and foremost as a person, not as a "pretty girl" or, worse, a "hot chick."

Then I did some internet browsing one night and I discovered:
www.thegreysweatsuitrevolution.com These kids in Montréal have a great idea: if all those people who have gotten over fashion or (hear my applause) were never into it anyway TRADE IN their "WHATEVER" CLOTHES FOR A GREY SWEAT-SUIT, then we would, together, make a strong and identifiable VISIBLE STATEMENT to the world at large that says:

"Let's get over our vanity, and EARN RESPECT from others FOR WHO WE REALLY ARE."

Because you looked to me like you might be up to this sort of challenge, I have personally handed you a photocopy of this letter to ask you to consider adopting the grey sweat-suit uniform yourself--however, whenever, to whatever extent you can.
It's not political, it's not anarchist, it's simply human. It's not anti-fashion so much as pro-humanity. Common sense distinguishing itself from the sheep mentality that permeates our culture. And you don't have to go all or nothing: you can start gradually, say, wearing the grey sweat-suit only on weekends at first. But know that any time you go out in public wearing a grey sweat-suit, you will be taking a step towards saving the self-esteem and integrity of future generations!

Some very "cool" and "classy" and "venerable" people are already adopting the grey sweat-suit uniform in New York right now: artists, writers, musicians, actors, elected officials, academics… Even a few brave souls in the corporate world, whom I want to congratulate especially, have started grey sweat-suit trends in their offices!
(The Scandinavians are way ahead of us on this: they've realized that workers are much more productive when they are physically comfortable and traditional suit/tie pumps/lipstick business attire is finally being modernized, meaning, got rid of. If you work in the corporate world, try speaking candidly to your boss about the psychological effects of wearing constricting clothing in the workplace. If you get fired, sue me, but it simply hasn't occurred to most executives that there are other better options for business attire, and many have been receptive to an optional grey sweat-suit uniform for their employees.)

Please check out www.thegreysweatuitrevolution.com and feel free to contact me with questions/thoughts/concerns on the matter: I'd love to hear from you!

Sincerely,

Geneviève Galvani

email: yeygreynyc@yahoo.com

ps. according to Wikipedia: Manual of Style (spelling), "grey" is the most common (worldwide) spelling of the word in English. Only USA and Canada use "gray" as an alternate spelling. So I'm going with "grey", for the purpose of universality.

pps. Again, thanks for looking like a real person in New York! It's why I handed you this letter. Ask your friends what they think of the grey sweat-suit idea, and get your grandmother in on it! The more we are, and the more diverse we are, the more powerful our collective statement will be.

Have a nice day!

Hi guys...now that my snow rants are over its time for a public service message:

take a few minutes to shovel out the street side of your nearest fire hydrant. Take care of an arc of about 90 degrees.

Because its gonna take FDNY a little longer to get into a location because of the snow, precious time is gonna be lost in getting water on a fire. On top of that, if the Firefighter operating the pumper has to fight his way in through the snow to hook up to the hydrant and get water going, its gonna cost even MORE time. It might not seem like that much, but those first few minutes are super critical and can make a big difference between someone surviving and a fatality.

So before youhead out for the snowball fights and snow angel sessions...take a few minutes to help out with this.

And be super careful with space heaters if youre using them. Keep em far away from combustibles.

subway story

Ok, some here may find this story mildly amusing.

The other day I was at the lex/59th platform waiting for the N train. It was rush hour. Super busy/lots of people. An R train pulls up. The whole train was packed except for the last car. Out of the corner of my eye, I see a huge homeless man sitting on the NEARLY empty car. Usually I avoid staring, so I took one quick glance, and saw this guy was no ordinary NY homeless, his hair & appearance was far worse than we are used to seeing. So, I quickly glanced away again.

Then the train doors opened, and a smell of feet SPEWED out of the car sooo bad I thought I would choke.

So I thought to myself, Damn it smells like feet!!!! I had to look at the homeless guy again, and sure enough, he had taken off his socks and shoes & was rubbing his feet!!!! I started laughing sooo hard, the people around me thought I was yet another nut!

Hey do any of you guys have trouble with bugs, NOT ROACHES or ANTS........
I mean silverfish or "house" centipedes?
I live in an old house, very old actually, and I am on the verge of "losing it", bugs give me the creeps, and I am just crawling out of my skin here, b/c I have seen some awful creepy crawlies.....UUUUHGGG
UUUHHGGGGGGG

I know it's typical too to have "water bugs" here in NY, what's the best way to get rid of them, I was thinking of putting metal type fencing on my drains, so they can't get in......

UUUHHGGG

What's the proper subway etiquette for when you're on a sparcely populated 7 train and a crazy person is desperately trying to start a crazy conversation with you about how they're "going to pick up some oil" and you just want to read your book? Should you just say something real crazy back like "I'm gonna get there first and take all the oil before you even get a drop my crazy friend, but don't go gettin' more crazy, I'm sure they're have some even better oil tomorrow?"

I read this quote, and I want to hear everyones opinion. What do you have to say!

" Most people will reveal everything you need to know about them in the first 15 to 20 minutes after we meet them, if only we bother to notice"

Okay, how true is that? I mean you have to very in tune to little nuances, don't you? For that to be effective?

I had the chance to glance at a newspaper today that covered the story of some judge throwing out several panhandling arrests. If I read correctly, if the panhandling situation is conducted in a peaceful manner, its not illegal.
*IS* that the case?
If so, at what point is it considered to have ceased being peaceful therefore making the panhandler subject to arrest?

Does this mean we will now basically have to put up with being panhandled by these fucking skells with no recourse?

God I miss Mayor Rudy.

I am thirty so were talking the fiftys or so...I would suppose. I'm putting out feelers. I have more specific info if necessary. Thanks!

I tend to assume that anyone talking to me on the subway is a loonie, and if I talked to someone on the subbay I would be assumed to be a loonie. But sometimes I see hot guys checking me out. No one ever makes a move, maybe it's just too public. Then again, my roommate met someone on the subway...

So what do we think...dating on the subway...okay or strickly loonie territory?

Anyone else think that the mosaics of the eyes in the Chambers st station are absolutely amazing. There has to be a hundred of them. Each one is distinct and different. You can amost tell what the entire face looks like and what they're feeling, just from the one eye. I used to spend a lot otime looking at them when i travelled through the WTC on my way home to jersey City.

This is the night you dream of.

This is risk + revelry.

This event is unpermitted. This is an open celebration
of liberation, an escape of the clamp-down, a
reclaiming of streets, a making of mischief and the
waking of the wild season. It's been a long dark
winter - this is our night to burn bright.

With that you should keep these IMPORTANT issues in mind:

-	Call the info line for updated information
throughout the event. The number is: 212.252.2051

-	Sign up at the website for text messages to keep
abreast of changes.

-	Pay attention to coaxers wearing wings, they know where
to go and will be guiding you.

-	This is your event as it is ours, this is a community
effort. Watch out for yourself and the people around you.

-	We have legal support if anything goes awry.

-	Leave no trace. Keep all garbage with you and dispose
of it in the proper place.

You need to bring: Metrocards, small gifts and
tradeables, wings, *your own drinks*, body paint,
fireworks and rocketships, water, the fire inside you,
the heat between us, the warmth on the street to
ignite, to explode.

On Weather: We have been watching the weather reports
incredibly closely for the past several weeks. All
detailed weather reports say that Saturday will be
clearing with a small chance of thunderstorms. We like
static, we like electricity, but all in moderation. We
feel in our centers that the weather is going to clear
into a gorgeously warm night with a low in the 60's,
the first weekend night it will be that warm. However,
we have no control.

If the weather takes a turn for the ugly, for the
torrential or for the apocalyptic, call the info line
(212.252.2051) check your text messages, and check your
e-mail in case of major changes to our plan of action.

Bring a jacket, this is an *all night event* and the
heat of our Saturday will cool into a crisp Sunday
morning.

http://www.firstwarmnight.com

This is it. This is the night you dream of.

subway mosaic, bas relief, cool little known stuff, food tour....

Hi guys~
seems like decent weather is finally around us. I was talking to another member of this here tribe last night about taking a ramble/tour/walkabout whateva ya wanna call it through some of the more interesting parts of the subway. We can check out specific mosaics/bas reliefs, sites where some of the more spectacular wrecks occurred, places of historic interest in terms of growth of the system etc...maybe the Transit Museum too...ending up maybe at a nice place to grab chow (alas the food places IN the system dont exist anymore).

She liked the idea.

Anyone *else* interested?

snow and fire hydrants

Hi guys~
those of you who're digging out today might wanna take a few extra minutes to dig out any fire hydrants you see near your homes. Two reasons:

if theres a fire, chances are the guy driving the first pumper to arrive will be on his own in terms of getting the rig hooked up to the hydrant and getting water ready to go once the hoseline is in position. Under the best of conditions that takes a bit of time. If the guy has to fight his way in because of the hydrant being packed in snow...its gonna take that much more time (the first few minutes of a fire are the most crucial) for him to get water.

second, chances are hes not Hercules and is gonna have to use a hydrant wrench to uncap the outlet before flushing the hydrant and hooking up. If the snow is up to the caps, hes NOT gonna be able to turn it.

The seconds that're shaved off by someone digging the hydrant out can make the difference between someone getting out alive/making a good stop and someone dying/being homeless.

My friend & got some drunken bagel on the way home from the village one night, and we were alone on the platform. You know those little holes or pipes in the tiled walls about a foot from the floor? (What are they, drainage?) Well for some unfathomable reason she decided to squat down and place a bit of bagel on the edge of the hole as she chewed on a nugget of her own. (I guess I can understand this, to be honest, as I for one often feel quite compelled to reach out and touch anything that is round and shiny). Anyway, no sooner did she stand up than the morsel zipped into the pipe by unseen hands, as if the rat had been sitting right there, just out of view, waiting for some sucker to come along and put some bagel there. The combination of the bagel quickly dissapearing and her drunken, slow-motion reaction of utter joy was too much for me, and I almost wet my pants.

what drew me to new york city

okay, i take that back. along with a thousand OTHER reasons why i love nyc., ,

the fucking subways topped it all off. i visited only once, this june, and loved the 24-hour (mainly, am i correct?) subway systems. i didn't mind the heat and odors, didn't bother me much, in fact irritated me much less than san francisco's (where i currently live) constant wind, strong breezes, and dreaded fog.

i loathe san franciscos run-down, rip-off bus system. takes forever to get places and wait for the damn buses, and they're forever raising the fare withOUT making any noticeable improvement or repairs.

i will live in nyc soon! i hope next year. i'll do whatever it takes to get there and afford to live there.

it can't be much more than san francisco, so i'll make it, and i'll love the subways [until i get sick of them,....

Earth Shoes

Earth Shoes
by Christopher J. Bradley
(c)2004

A new door opens,
An indian walks in,
He sets down his tomahawk,
And welcomes Columbus,

Columbus responds,
And builds up the Coast,
Then returns to Spain,
And brings with him Portugal.

Another Door Opens,
And East India walks to America,
And the Buffalo welcome him,
And he rides the American Dream,
His batmobile a Mazda Prototype,
He engineers the future,
In the secrecy of his basement,
Where cold politics run amok,
And the vicious blond bombers,
Try to push their asses against headboards,
But he is smart enough to know,
That wine is not the solution,
To the puzzle presented by Rubik and Big Green.

And so the Indian Moves with Columbus,
To topple the tower of Babble,
And Make the world,
One Big Video Game,
And Buy A Big Hitachi,
While Takahashi Spreads the Virus,
To infect the unclean,
With the dope that keeps them in Darkness,
Just for a time to prevent an uprising,

And then gradually,
As the sun shines on an Ellis Island,
Long missing from our land,
Share the freedoms of America,
And buy a McDonald's Happy Meal,
For Every Kid in Ethiopia,
And Fundamentally Change the world,
For the better.

The dreams of this power child,
Will be realized,
In the scripting of the future,
And the apostles will see fire again,
And speak the language of the people,
Through the open doors of the Alta Vista Babel Fish,
On the morning that the shark burns chrome,
And the children of tomorrows children,
Come to learn,
That the pen is mightier,
Than any sword, known, to mankind,

You can take that to the bank,
And set me up with a loan,
Through the dragonfly,
Whose relationship to me,
Is sounder than the fury,
And warmer than a summer day,
At the skydome in Toronto,
And who doesn't mind,
That her cousin, sometimes,
Has to cry for help.

Tom Cruise is on the big screen now,
And Ray will be out soon,
And if you can put the two together,
In Hollywoood,
You know exactly where I'll be resting,
At 11:30 this morning,
While the ships sail out from port hope,
And St. Catherines,
And the race of the century,
Is unleashed from its moorings,

And the people of the mighty Niagara,
Are so in tune with Brooklyn,
That it matters not what we say or do,
Because they are in fabulous love with us,
The spirits sing from beyond the grave,
of 400 years of enslavement,
And Jazz, Hip Hop, RnB, Techno,
Detroit, Chicago, and Boston,
Montreal, and Daytona,
Huntsville, and Monte Carlo,
Paris and London,
Are on Eastern Standard Time,
And Grenich Mean is Serious,
No single human can grasp my meaning,
Without 2 humpback whales,
And a journey back to 1969 with Spock,
And a girl with a notebook that plays,
Knight Rider and Speed Racer,
And James Bond's Mother,
Because we're taking it to the foundations,
And they are made of Tensile Concrete,
Strung Across Synthetic Cement,
And these Shoes,
Are 100%
Earth.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority took a preliminary vote Tuesday in favor of a ban on photography and video recording in the subway system.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg opposes the plan, but transit officials say the Police Department pushed for the ban. The intention is to hamper terrorists from surveilling potential targets.

The MTA board will make a final decision after a 45-day public comment period.

“I'm sure there'll be plenty of conversation with elected officials and with community groups to talk about it,” said MTA Chairman Peter Kalikow. “And everybody who wants to make themselves heard will make themselves heard, rest assured.”

Anyone caught taking photographs or video in subway trains or stations would be questioned by police, who could issue summonses and confiscate the camera. The only exception would be for credentialed members of the media and those with written permission from the MTA.

The $40 train ride

So, as many of us probably know, this year is the 100th anniversary of the MTA! As part of the celebrations, they are offering rides, for $40, on old subway cars.

Well that's way out of my budget range for fun, but yesterday I was heading into the city from Brooklyn on the F, thinking I'd switch to the V (doesn't run on weekends, doh!) at 2nd ave. But in the V's track was a 4-car connected line of subways..3 were similar, dark green, and 1, a light blue with blue and yellow diamonds on the floor. While it was waiting for the paying customers to arrive, we were allowed to walk through and check it out. And since I had to wait for another F train on a Saturday afternoon anyways, I had 10 minutes to kill.

So I walked through and took a few shots with my dinky cameraphone. What amazed me the most were the ads.. I got one in one of the shots linked to this tribe about buying war bonds (for the vietnam!). There was another ad about the Late JFK. Really intriguing stuff. If you have the $, or at least can get there early before the next ride (check mta.info), definitely check this thing out.

I guess they must have some of these at the subway museum here in Brooklyn, but I haven't been since I was a kid so this was exciting for me. Heck, I get excited whenever I see a Special Train (linked a shot of that today too, as well as a photo of DeKalb station on the DQMNR station that I'm real proud of) but this was a really special treat.

enjoy!

you could literally live in the subway. Before the MTA removed 99.9% of the concessions on the system by the early to mid 80s, there were places to get food, clothing, reading material, records/tapes, if you know where to look, you can even find running fresh water and toilet facilities.

One of my fondest memories of the subway is from my years in high school on the Upper West Side. Oh yes, I was *privately* schooled for those years. ;)

I used to love riding the Flushing Line (yup...da #7!~) across part of Queens at the front window of the train. Id go to Grand Central with my late mum, grab breakfast, and eat with her at her nearby office. Then hang out with a friend of mine who was a very senior supervisor on the IRT before heading up to school. The once concession at Grand Central was on the mezzanine. Food stand. Every morning, like clockwork..Id be midway up the second level of escalator from the #7...and the nauseating aroma of popcorn and orange juice would hit me. Dont get me wrong, I LOVE those scents. But on an empty stomach, oh god. Not good.
Meanwhile, Ive spent the last four or so years documenting the vintage mosaics and bas reliefs from the older parts of what used to be the IRT and BMT systems. As we progress, Ill be posting photos here in the album for you guys. Feel free to invite peeps you think would enjoy the place. Specially if theyre other Noo Yawkas.
As is my standing policy with tribes...no politics and play nice with the other kiddies.

People Watching

The thing I used to absolutely love about the subway was the people watching. Almost better than watching the rats!

I remember once I was getting on in Wall Street area, and the train was packed except in this one area, which of course I stepped into. As soon as the train started moving, this guy sitting right next to me starts violently yelling about the invaders, and killing the invaders, and his space, and on and on. The train comes into the next station, and he stops. Everyone within immediate vicinity QUICKLY moves to another car, or backs way way away. I joined them, and watched as some other sweet and young unsuspecting victim stepped on filling my empty seat. You could see all the warning glances and nervous looks, knowing what would happen as soon as the doors closed.

True to form, the train starts, he starts and this poor girl's eyes pop out of her head, and she immediately starts scanning for an exit. This was repeated at least four times. At one point an engineer or security officer came into the car to see what was going on, but the moment he opened the door, the psycho was silent as the grave.

I'm obsessed with someday getting to do the whole subway system in one sitting. I've copied the mta.info map and draw out the entire path i'd take.. but i have some questions.

does it count if you take a bus from one end of a line to the end of another line (are there any?).. like in the bronx? or do you have to ride backwards to connections?

can you go outside and walk to close-by stations like in the wall street area, rather than doubling back?

do you have to hit every station on each line, or is it ok to just hit every station once? what about transfer stations where there are different tracks.. does that count as 1 or 2 separate?

how long does it take? the fastest i've heard is 25 hours.

im not sure i really need to actually do the whole ride, esp since most lines are under construction anyways, but just find the easiest routes.

FYI: My grandfather's image is in one of the mosaic title art piece at the 86th street station on the 1 line. Check it out if you're on that line. He's the one leaning against the meter and you'll see a small pumpkin patch in the front of him. I think it was very cool of the artitst to be immoralize him in his memory.
